In Thy kingdom remember us, O Lord, * when Thou comest in Thy kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, * for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, * for they shall be comforted. 10. Blessed are the meek, * for they shall inherit the earth. We offer Thee the voice of the thief / and cry aloud to Thee: / Remember us, O Savior // in Thy Kingdom. 9. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, * for they shall be filled. We bring Thee the Cross / for the forgiveness of offenses. / For us hast Thou accepted it, // O Lover of mankind. 8. Blessed are the merciful, * for they shall obtain mercy. We venerate, O Master, / Thy tomb and Thy rising, / through which Thou hast delivered the world from corruption, // O Lover of mankind. 7. Blessed are the pure in heart, * for they shall see God. By Thy death, O Lord, death has been swallowed up, / and by Thy Resurrection, / O Savior, // has the world been saved. 6. Blessed are the peacemakers, * for they shall be called the sons of God. Risen from the tomb / Thou hast met the women bearing myrrh / and told the disciples // to proclaim Thy Rising. 5. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, * for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Those sleeping in darkness / have seen Thee, the Light, / and they have risen // out of the nethermost parts of hell, O Christ. 4. Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, * and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Now let the land of Ryazan' be glad; / for therein the holy John sprang forth from a pious root, // to put forth the fruits of confession and martyrdom. 3. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, * for great is your reward in heaven. All of Russia rejoices exceedingly / in thy sacred memory, O hieromartyr, // rendered steadfast in the Faith by the cross thou didst bear. 2. Glory to the Father, * and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Many are they who in the heavens / form the choir of new martyrs and confessors, // whose splendid chorus thou didst boldly lead, O saint of God. 1. Now and ever, * and unto ages of ages. Amen. Establish us firmly on the rock of faith, O ever-blessed one, / lest the billows of temptations and perils overwhelm us; // yea, save us, O Lady. TROPARIA & KONTAKIA Troparion, Resurrection, Tone 2: When Thou didst descend to death, O Life immortal, / Thou didst slay hell with the splendor of Thy Godhead; / and when from the depths Thou didst raise the dead, / all the powers of heaven cried out: // O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory to Thee! [Troparion, Church (if of the Theotokos or Saint(s))] Troparion, Hieromartyr, Tone 1: Aflame with love for God / thou gavest thy life as a martyr for Christ and neighbor, / and so didst receive a crown of righteousness from Him. / Hieromartyr John, entreat the most merciful God / to preserve His holy Church in peace // and to save our souls! Kontakion, Resurrection, Tone 2: Hell became afraid, O almighty Savior, / seeing the miracle of Thy resurrection from the tomb; / the dead arose. Creation, with Adam, beheld this and rejoiced with Thee, // and the world, O my Savior, praises Thee forever. [Kontakion, Church (if of Saint(s))] Glory... Kontakion, Hieromartyr, Tone 3: Now the holy Hieromartyr is glorified, / for he took up his cross and followed Christ. / In so doing, he gave us a model of true discipleship. / Therefore, let us cry aloud to him: // Rejoice, O Father John, the glory of priests! Now and ever... [Kontakion, Church (if of the Theotokos). If not, then:] Kontakion, Theotokos, Tone 6: Steadfast Protectress of Christians, / constant advocate before the Creator, / despise not the cry of us sinners, / but in thy goodness come speedily to help us who call on thee in faith: / hasten to hear our petition and to intercede for us, O Theotokos, // for thou dost ever protect those who honor thee. [(194) 2 Corinthians 11:31-12:9] Brethren: The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He Who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. * At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, * but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. * I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. * I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. * And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- * and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. * On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. * Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. * And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. * Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; * but He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for thee, for My power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. [(99) Romans 8:28-39] Brethren: We know that everything works for good with those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. * For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the first-born among many brethren. * And those whom He predestined He also called; and those whom He called He also justified; and those whom He justified He also glorified. * What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us? * He Who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, shall He not also give us all things with Him? * Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God Who justifies; * who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, Who died, yes, Who was raised from the dead, Who is at the right hand of God, Who indeed intercedes for us. * Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? * As it is written, "For Thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." * No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us. * For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, * nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, shall be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Priest: Peace be unto thee, Reader. Reader: And to thy spirit. ALLELUIA Deacon: Wisdom! Reader: The Alleluia in the 2nd Tone: May the Lord hear thee in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect thee! Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Reader: Save the King, O Lord, and hear us on the day we call to Thee! Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Reader: In the same tone: Thy priests shall be clothed with righteousness and Thy saints shall rejoice! Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! GOSPELS [(38) Luke 8:26-39] At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. * And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. * When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me." * For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) * Jesus then asked him, "What is thy name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. * And they begged Him not to command them to depart into the abyss. * Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Him to let them enter these. So He gave them leave. * Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. * When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. * Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. * And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. * Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned. * The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with Him; but He sent him away, saying, * "Return to thy home, and declare how much God has done for thee." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. [(106) Luke 21:12-19] The Lord said to His disciples: "Beware of men. * They shall lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and ye shall be brought before kings and governors for My name's sake. * This shall be a time for you to bear testimony. * Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; * for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries shall be able to withstand or contradict. * Ye shall be delivered up even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they shall put to death; * ye shall be hated by all for My name's sake. * But not a hair of your head shall perish. * By your endurance ye shall gain your lives." COMMUNION VERSES Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise Him in the highest! The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance; he shall not fear evil tidings. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
